Alpha Prime - Game Preview

The game is a classical sci-fi fps, based on a story written by Ondrej Neff. It was developed by Black Element Software studios (located in Czech Republic), known for their previous work: Shade: Wrath of Angels. The game looks very promising from the graphics point of view. As a bonus, the graphical engine (PATHEngine) is compatible with Matrox TripleHead2Go system, enabling any gamer to connect 3 screens with a maximum resolution of up to 3840x1024. So from the technical perspective, the game is very promising, but let's see in depth what can this game offer to the player.

The environmental design is very similar to DOOM 3, the whole action taking place in an underground facility. But at least, the design is not so boring, and the bump-mapping is not too much used. The physics are great, but you don't have too many possibilities in the demo, where you can use them. You can carry different objects from the environment, and break windows glasses. The problem is in the ragdoll effect (if you consider it exists in the game). Almost every enemy lands on his behind and remains there.

You will meet only some humans, soldiers, and robots on your way. I hope that in the whole game, there is a much wider variety of enemies. Using the same method from DOOM 3, the game difficulty consists in how many bullets the enemy can take, and not in an average A.I.. Every enemy has a scripted area of patrolling. You can observe that he always will patrol on the same route.

Alpha Prime is a game that will not overpass the borders of classical fps. Even the arsenal is classic (similar to DOOM and Halflife). Shaped in a sci-fi manner, it consists in a pistol, shotgun, machine gun, assault rifle, rocket launcher, flamethrower, and grenades. Further in the game you will use also a hubbardium derivate and a recon tool. The hubbardium derivate will sharpen your senses, creating a bullet time effect. For a few seconds you will be invincible. The coolest device is the ReCon, a remote controller which can hack all sorts of electronically devices, from armed robots and crate manipulators, to cameras and security systems.

The main character looks quite old, but similar to Gordon Freeman. Not from the physical aspect point of view, but from the uniform it carries and the melee tool. While Gordon wear his legendary crowbar, the character here carries a hammer. Useful when attacking from behind, but as I already saw, the game offers few sneaking moments. So there's no need actually using it.

The story does not exist in the demo version, but some bit parts. The dialogs and subtitles are probably translated from Czech language. The voice acting is really bad, but compared to Red Ocean, where there is almost no story, you can accept it as it is.

If you really want to play a classical shooter, we can offer you the demo version of Alpha Prime . Compared to what I have played in recent weeks, this game deserves a bit of attention, especially from the fps fans.
