Alpha Prime - Game Review (PC)

The first seconds of the game, strikes you with a Doom 3 like graphics, but seems it's just a simple similarity, because Black Element used the home made Enforce 2 engine to create the game. Along with PathEngine, the game really has the capacity to offer a solid gameplay, and in some level sections, it really does. Unfortunately the script is not written by Ondrej Neff, and this can be seen by the dialog's low quality. So the game suffers from a lack of quality in dialogs, although the actors who made the voice-acting tried to do their best. So if the story (the secret key of this game), doesn't stand above other mediocre productions, let's see what else can this game offer.

Arnold the prospector!

You play as Arnold an ex prospector (something like a hubbardium miner) who has to save Warren (a friend of him) from a secret mining base, located on an illegal asteroid. You will be guided along your way by Livia (Warren's wife and your ex girlfriend) who plays a key role in the whole game. The contact between you and her and all the other NPC's will be established by a voice signal transmitter, so you will not receive a direct support from any of them. There is only a short scene in the first level where you will helped by an Italian guy to kill some enemies. Otherwise you will be all alone in your battle to conquer the secret facility. You are actually caught in a soap-opera plot with some sci-fi elements. Why the mining robots are out of control and why special troops are trying to put their hands on this mine, you will discover yourself if you want to end the game.

Difficult enemies

Ending the game is a matter of strong nerves and self controlling. And this is valid on the easy setting. The cause of this high difficulty is not the aggressive A.I. of the enemy, or their numbers, but the fact that you have to shoot too many times to kill one. Mixed with the difficulty of finding health supplies, the game becomes a real challenge even for the most experienced fps gamers. If you take in consideration also that in some levels you need to search for oxygen supplies, this game can become your worst nightmare. The official release statement was saying that there are 14 types of enemies in the game. But these types are actually created based on a few basic models with few variations.

I don't consider a new enemy one that looks the same like the others but has a red uniform instead of blue. The example can go further with the robots or with the human being inhabiting the facility.

So the story and the difficulty of the game makes you somehow not to try it, and that's the reason why the game was not so tested by the press.

Environment

Most of the action takes place into the facility, so most of the time you will wander through the same looking corridors. Lucky that the repetitive sight will change in several places such as assembling rooms, machinery rooms, offices.
