Eve Online – The Story of a Trial - Game Review (PC)

You can understand why the fans were thrilled when CCP decided to implement this genre into a MMO. In December 2003, the Icelandic company CCP Games finished the development of the game and which was released by Simon & Schuster Interactive. Soon after that, CCP purchased the rights back and the saga took its course.

Four years after the release of the game, Revelation II, the latest expansion was launched.

It seemed to be a miracle really, when a natural wormhole was discovered. It was the gateway to a distant galaxy so far away, it was impossible to even tell where exactly. Always intrepid, humans moved through, founded new civilizations, and named the system New Eden.

One day, the New Eden lost its edenic feeling. The wormhole blew up in a galactic catastrophe. New Eden was permanently cut off from Earth and most of the colonies were back in the Dark Age, the scattered outpost were forced to find their way to survive by any means necessary. Soon, the whole universe was divided between five warring factions.

The Jovians were the first to revive their civilization and started exploring the universe. In the end, they managed to almost decimate their entire population after their genetic experimentation resulted in the deadly "Jovian Disease", a condition that causes depression, so deep the inflicted lose all will to live. After that, they retreat to an unknown location and severed all stargate connections to their space .

Amarr, Minmatar, Gallente and Caldari are the only playable factions present in the game and all have their own specific history. Some are warriors, some explorers while others are seeking to free themselves from the domination. But you will uncover all this as you progress through the game.

First, you must create a character. There are four races, five attributes, three bloodlines to choose from. After all this, you will have to choose an ancestry which will add some attributes, allowing you to either increase your weak attributes or to strengthen the others. Now that we finished creating the attribute part, it's time to go for a career. There are three carriers to choose from: industrial, military and business. After you choose your carrier, you will have to choose a specialization. Two specialization are available for each carrier, allowing you to shape a character as you please. The attributes and skills are now final and you are left with the portrait customization. All in all, it's one of the most interesting and bigger character creation that I've seen so far. Too bad that in the end you will remain with only a picture of yourself.

Once you have a name and a face, it's time for people to start remember it. You start with a tutorial so big that took me over 8 hours to finish it. Some complain that is too long but you can stop it at any time and continue with the game if you please. After this, you have a ship and some money so it's time to start making your way to the top.

The ships look amazing but so does the universe. Planets, gas clouds, asteroid belts, nebulae - it's all just beautiful, and the whole thing has a dark, mysterious, intriguing way to captivate players. How can you still play when sometimes you only want to travel to different places to see the wonders of the universe?

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger... errrr... what DOES kill you... aaahh forget it....

The universe is rough. You must fight your way and sometimes you will get killed. On your long way to better yourself, sacrifices must be made. Ships blown to pieces, money is lost, but you are getting better and you learn from your mistakes.

The are no peace zones for you to be safe, only zones that are protected by Concord, the police that ensures justice is respected and gives a hard time to those who brake the law. Even in territories where Concord is present (in systems where security is above 0.5) you can get attacked and killed. The attacker might get a pummel from the Concord if they arrive in time but this is not a law so take care.

Since we are at the “shoot first, ask later” chapter, let's review the combat system. There is a very large number of ships available for the players to fly. Some are for mining and other are just industrial. But probably the most interesting ones are for combat. They serve a lot of purposes to the game as you will encounter from small frigates to large, heavy battleships, battlecruisers and the mighty Titan.

Each faction has it's own ships. They all look different and their structure is different. The Amarr uses lasers while Caldari relies on missiles to get the job done. Except that, other parts can be used by all the other factions. From electronic warfare, to combat boosters, weapons and additional modules, the variety of items is so big that you can get lost easily. This is probably that the market suffered some modifications along the way and turned into a very handy tool.

Combat is fairly straightforward. You target one or more enemy ships, launch the drones (if you have any), engage your shield and armor, your electronic warfare modules and blast the enemies “off the sky”. In the end, if you are still alive you will get the loot and go for another adrenaline session.

You can get missions from agents, each with it's specialization. What does this means? Well, an internal security agent will mostly send you to finish off enemies while a management agent will send you as a courier into space. At the end of each mission you will receive a reward, sometimes even a bonus if you've completed a mission in time and you get an increase standings with that faction and agent. This will allow you to advance and receive more and more dangerous missions, with a pay according to the difficulty.

Welcome back, LEGION. Indeed, Joe Kucan is back, portraying the legendary self-proclaimed prophet Kane, through 20 years of Command and Conquer history: past, present and future. The 13 missions spread story explains what happened to the Brotherhood of Nod right after the Second Tiberium War, and fill the history gap left by the original Command and Conquer 3. And then of course some more, the action takes us a bit more into the future, showing just a sneak peak of the shape of things to come.

Sins of a Solar Empire
The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes versus Arsene Lupin
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
Silent Hunter 4: Pacific U-Boat Missions
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Sword of the New World: Granado Espada
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
GC: Disciples 3: Renaissance
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Nitro Stunt Racing Stage 1
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
GC: Aion Tower of Eternity
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
Race 07
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
