Fallout 3 - Game Review (PC)

Conclusion

image

Even with a lot of negative reactions from the old school, hardcore Fallout fans, even with some aspects that lack the depth we were used to from the old games, and even with the dramatic change of the combat mechanics and camera system, Fallout 3 is still Bethesda's crown jewel and one of the best games this year. I advise everyone, friend or foe to give it a shot.

Gameplay: 89

To re-iterate the idea, even if the game "doesn't cut it" for you, it's a strange new experience and you must test it for yourself. The fact is not if the game has a bit of that old Fallout feel, because it actually does, quite a bit. The problem is if it has enough for you, and if you are willing to give it a shot. But that is a judgment you will have to make it for yourself. If you haven't played any of the previous Fallout games, or you've never been to keen on them when they were launched, maybe this is your lucky break with enough twist to get the sparks going.

Graphics: 94

Comparing it to other games that have launched this year, Fallout 3 looks better than everything. The landscapes are really remarkable and the water looks excellent. And the graphic engine doesn't seem to do much compromise when it comes to landscapes or monsters. Human models... that's another story.

Sound: 91

You must at least try to listen to Enclave Radio for a bit! Radio stations and the subtle but deep background music really help set the mood and stage for everything Fallout 3 and you shouldn't miss them. Voice acting, especially for the main quest is very good and done by some famous names. There are the occasional annoying voices that just don't seem to fit to the whole picture, but hopefully you'll be able to get over those fast.

Multiplayer: N/A

Hardware: 88

With a number of bugs and crashes to desktop, I think that a couple of patches are in order. Performance is good if you have a high end computer, and the game is very scalable. I've noticed some sound choppiness issues when some radio stations are playing on various computers, depending on the installed sound card, that can be annoying sometimes. Maybe we'll see a fix for that as well.

*Note* I just remembered we have under our downloads section the Pre-Alpha version of old Fallout 3, codename "Van Buren". It's the old, never released game from Black Isle/Interplay. Feel free to give it a try!

“Fortunately, the most annoying feature in Oblivion (level scaling) didn`t make it to Fallout 3”
LOLWUT. Google browsing, easy to learn:
“Are the enemies scaled to your level?
A variation of level scaling is used to control the difficulty of the main quest, but enemies in areas that are not essential to the main quest will not be scaled to your level. Some places will be adjusted to your level when you first enter them, but they will not level up when you return - unlike Oblivion, you won't find raiders in Power Armor. “

“Not only did Fallout 1 and its successful sequel Fallout 2 manage to create one of the most believable post-apocalyptic, nuclear futures”
What are you talking about, believable? It’s got some of the most outlandish and quirky takes on a PA environment ever to hit a monitor’s screen. Did you even play Fallout 2? Pop culture references by the hundreds, Monty Python cameos and that’s if you manage to utterly and completely ignore the STORYLINE, which includes but is not restricted to: cold fusion discovered, ‘40s and early 50s “duck and cover” design bits in a futuristic universe, a completely different aftermath to the 2nd World War, etc. You don’t want me posting spoilers around here so I’ll just stop there, but despite it’s immersiveness and complexity, the Fallout universe is everything BUT believable.

“or even Steampack to heal your wounds...”
Gee golly, for “die-hard” Fallout fans you sure can’t spell Stimpack :O

“Using... Steampack to heal your wounds on a regular basis will result in severe addiction.”
o.0 ye, “Steampack” addiction. Worst affliction out yet...
http://planetfallout.gamespy.com/aids/3/Stimpack
...but you’re doing it wrong.

“The skill points received at each level up should be distributed at one or maybe two weapon skills and all other should be divided between the other non-combat, but equally important, skills.”
Since when “should” anyone pump a preset configuration into an RPG? Least of all Fallout, which you claim to be “a die-hard Fallout fan ever since [you were] a little gamer”. You should have known that one of the most solid aspects in Fallout (1 and 2) was that you could play a large variety of character styles, and there’s really nothing you “should” do when making up or specializing your character except think. -_-

“one of the best games this years.”
“The overseer of the vault goes nuts when he discovers and goes”
“I had my share of doubts”
“one of the most difficult games to review, of this year.”
“he few radio stations that are still live.”

Mr. Andrei/Zuluf

Me, my colleague Alex and I'm sure everyone here at Games32 will always welcome constructive criticism. That said, making fun of some auto-correct spelling mistakes or just spelling a seldom word wrong happens even to the greatest writers, and it happened to us as well despite our efforts to avoid them.

If we talk about Fallout facts, it's not a question of "who has the biggest" article, who played the most Fallout in this world, and who is an almighty god. We know about your Fallout review published roughly the same time as ours, and think that instead of pointing us to an English lessons site, you maybe wanted to point us in the direction of your computergames.ro article.

You have your share of wrong facts there, even if you read the entire Wikipedia about Fallout, trust me. I will not go into a game of "point out the other's mistakes" because that is just childish.
Instead, I'm gonna say thank you for pointing out to our spelling mistakes, and will not go into the level scaling, because "a variation" that works on specific monsters and is not the same thing - it's a debatable problem at least.

It's easy to write 2-3 articles as a freelancer a year and publish them on a website, without any pressure and with plenty of time. When you have a review per week with a lot more work on the side, you will see it's not so hard to make some tiny mistakes from time to time.

And then of course some more, the action takes us a bit more into the future, showing just a sneak peak of the shape of things to come.

Sins of a Solar Empire
The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes versus Arsene Lupin
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
Silent Hunter 4: Pacific U-Boat Missions
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Sword of the New World: Granado Espada
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
GC: Disciples 3: Renaissance
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Nitro Stunt Racing Stage 1
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
GC: Aion Tower of Eternity
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
Race 07
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
