Race - The WTCC Game - Game Review (PC)
By Flaviu Volosciuc
Published: March 7, 2007
Print The World Touring Car Championship is organized by FIA. It was first held in 1987 concurrent with the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC). Due to the high costs, the championship was not considered successful and it was abandoned a year later. At the request of the manufacturers, the ETCC was changed into WTCC and started again under this name in 2005. In just 2 years with the help of FIA and Eurosport, the championship became very popular, being considered the third most important championship after Formula One and World Rally Championship. This year there will be 11 tracks and six manufacturers who will battle again for the cup.
R.A.C.E. is the game that wants to
highlight once again (if it's necessary) how spectacular this
championship is. Using the same concept from GTR 2, the
game is another simulation masterpiece. You will encounter all the
official tracks and manufacturers plus all the drivers that race
here. Compared to GTR 2 or TOCA 3, here there are not so many car
models. So you will have to access also other support
championships. The '87 WTCC where you can drive an Alf Romeo 75
Turbo and a BMW e30 M3 and the Mini Challenge which features only
the Mini Cooper S.
This lack of diversity, is the cause of the official content, which here seems to be not enough. WTCC is still a young championship and there are not many manufacturers. But the fun is not necessarily the number of cars, but the way you drive them. And this is the main point where R.A.C.E. overtakes the competition.
The Handling
The handling of the car is different from what you have seen in other games. First because this is a simulation and second because all the cars (except the BMW) have front wheel drive. Actually I think this is the only simulation game where you can drive cars with front wheel drive. Because of this, the physics of the car are different from what you have seen before. You don't have to push so hard the brakes, otherwise you will end up blocking the wheels and the car will become out of control. When you exit the curves, you can accelerate very hard. The front wheel drive helps you do this. After the first rounds I was a little bit confused how the car was handling, although I am not new to racing simulation games. But these front-wheel racing cars are somehow unusual to drive.
Menu
One of the biggest problems in GTR series was the menu. But the problem ends up in R.A.C.E.. SimBin recreated the whole menu, so you don't have to search anymore the options. They quit the old concept used in GTR series (inter laid tabs), and came with a very easy one. Even the setup car option is much more easy to use and to understand. Coming to this point I have to admit that I used this option much more than in previously SimBin games. First because it's much more easy to use and because you need to create a gap between you and the other opponents. And this can be achieved only by a good setup.
Regulations and Limitations
WTCC has a lot of mechanical limitations, which are also included in the game. The cars should not have more than 2.0 liters capacity, and a rev limit to 8500 rpm. This means you have to squeeze every drop of power out of your engine to become more and more faster. The first results will be seen if you begin to change the gear ratios. Another important setting is the toe-in angle which makes the steering much more responsive. The game seems to be not so fast as GTR series and this is true because these cars don't run with more than 156 mph. But at the same time the game becomes more challenging because there are not so many differences between your car and the others. The A.I. is not necessarily more aggressive but is much more advanced than in other so-called racing games. For somebody that things Need for Speed and Ridge Racer are the best racing games, should not play this one! The opponents won't miss any chance to overtake you if they will find any way to do it.
Damage
Like in all SimBin games, there is also a damage system, but not very sophisticated. If you play on 100% realism, the car will damaged very fast if you play aggressive. It's enough just to lose a part from the car body and the car will become incontrollable. A single hit in the side wall can mute your engine forever. A big accent is put here on the tire wear, which makes you drive more cautious in a full length race. If you drive too much outside the track you will have a puncture for sure. Although I tried, I couldn't make the engine blow, like in GTR 2.Hide Comments (0)
Although it does not include all the patch notes, I thought I'd add this now so you get the general idea of what will change in the next major World of Warcraft Patch 2.4.0.

The image on the Blizzard Entertainment Splash Page is updated, continuing to raise expectations that an announcement is forthcoming from this weekend's Worldwide Invitational event.
Tornado & LightHouse PhysX Mod maps for UT3 ready for download now.

Welcome back, LEGION. Indeed, Joe Kucan is back, portraying the legendary self-proclaimed prophet Kane, through 20 years of Command and Conquer history: past, present and future. The 13 missions spread story explains what happened to the Brotherhood of Nod right after the Second Tiberium War, and fill the history gap left by the original Command and Conquer 3. And then of course some more, the action takes us a bit more into the future, showing just a sneak peak of the shape of things to come.

The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
