S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - Game Review (PC)

After one year from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl release, comes the prequel called S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky. A stand-alone expansion that reveals some of the secrets behind the Zone and the nuclear disaster. For a retrospective view please refer to our S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl review. Again you are a stalker called Scar who has survived a massive anomaly and has been rescued by a group of scientists known as Clear Sky. As you wake up in their camp situated in swamp region, you will find out that you are a natural mystery by surviving such a huge anomaly.

But this immunity carries a deadly consequence: the Zone will "eat you alive". Your organism will fade away for every new anomaly that will appear in the Zone. Your only chance of surviving is to venture into the center of the Zone and to gather enough informations that will be used by Clear Sky's scientists in order to stop the Zone to spread. Along your way you will travel through familiar places like Cordon, Agronom, and you will meet some characters from the original game. In few words GSC Game World decided to create a new world that consists of old and new areas in equal portions. Following the storyline the gameplay tends to be pretty linear but the immense environment gives you freedom to explore and the competing factions enough secondary objectives.

Factions

Probably this is the major addition compared to the original title. These factions can change dramatically the course of the game in a tactical manner. The start of the game presents a decent tutorial based on this idea teaching you how to conquer a region of the map for a chosen faction. After you exit the first area you are free to choose which faction to help or not, every new decision bringing tactical consequences between the factions which can be viewed in the PDA. But why would help these factions in the detriment of the main quest? For every succeeded secondary quest you will get rewards and as the faction will increase its reputation over the others you will have access to better weapons at the trading post.

Not to mention that by following only the main storyline you will find yourself financially broken after a while, and you will be forced to complete some new secondary missions in order to gain some money. As impressive as it may seem on the paper, in the game this new addition has also its problems. Many secondary objectives are canceled before ever reaching the checkpoint, or others end being successful without doing anything. Some of them are repeating themselves every time you return in that area although you had already completed them. Also the status of friendly or neutral factions can change instantly while you are walking in their area. While I was entering Dark Valley area governed by the Freedom faction I was threaten by the guards to holster my weapon or I will die. While I did this they began shooting at me and in no time I was dead. Quickload and the situation changed dramatically as I already knew what will happen. I still don't know if these kind of situations were predetermined by the developers or its just a mistake.

Friend: Flaviu Volosciuc

May I ask because I see the beginning of the game
the sky yellow. It's the only thing that looks out of place. I expect a response. Thank you.

Sometimes the sky is yellow, sometimes is blue, sometimes is grey. What would you expect? Like the question, so the answer.

Welcome back, LEGION. Indeed, Joe Kucan is back, portraying the legendary self-proclaimed prophet Kane, through 20 years of Command and Conquer history: past, present and future. The 13 missions spread story explains what happened to the Brotherhood of Nod right after the Second Tiberium War, and fill the history gap left by the original Command and Conquer 3. And then of course some more, the action takes us a bit more into the future, showing just a sneak peak of the shape of things to come.

Sins of a Solar Empire
The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes versus Arsene Lupin
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
Silent Hunter 4: Pacific U-Boat Missions
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Sword of the New World: Granado Espada
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
GC: Disciples 3: Renaissance
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Nitro Stunt Racing Stage 1
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
GC: Aion Tower of Eternity
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
Race 07
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
