Soldier Of Fortune Payback - Game Review (PC)

Print The levels are pretty diverse and you will go from cities in the desert to jungles, warehouses, caves and even a brothel. Your enemies will change accordingly... of clothes. There is no difference in shooting one of the enemies clad in armor, from the final level, to shooting terrorists in sheets, so only their appearance changes. The weapons you can choose from when starting a new level are plenty and some new ones will be made available during the game. You can even customize them by adding a scope, silencer, increased clip size and other options. The problem is that most of them are unnecessary and useless, such as the silencer, that the enemies will simply ignore anyway,
Let me mention the funny (slash) irritating boss battles. What's funny on one side is very annoying on the other. All of them are like your regular soldiers, only a lot tougher. The bullets leave the same marks on them and so on...; think of how ridiculous they look, after being shot 20 times. They're completely covered in blood, with bullet marks everywhere but they're pumping you full of bullets or grenades. Frustration will reach new peaks when battling the "boss" in the helicopter or the one in the tank. Keep an aspirin close by.
On the bright side, you can choose from a variety of weapons, from machine guns to sniper rifles and shotguns, each with plenty to choose from. The weapons aren't very realistic, as recoil is mostly nonexistent and there is no difference from an AK-47 and a handgun when it comes to damage. The problem when trying to shoot someone is if they shoot you first and then your aim will be completely off. On the final levels, enemies will be facing the way you're coming from, be behind cover, and will open fire as soon as they see you. I think I already mentioned the fact that you can die from one shot, didn't I? What does that add up to? Quick load, you might be thinking. Wrong, as there is no option to save or load the game.
Like on the Xbox, the game uses a checkpoint system. This wouldn't be an issue, but the checkpoints are few on every level. When you're repeating the same section ten times over, just to be killed by the final enemy, you will understand why this is a real problem. Also enemies have the tendency of sniping you with deadly accuracy from almost anyplace and I was often scratching my head wondering where I was being shot from. This is especially notable on the jungle level, where enemies are wearing camouflage and are shooting you from behind leaves and trees.
Let's move on to the graphics and sound, shall we? While it does have some interesting effects, like the depth of field blur when you reload and the explosions that look pretty realistic, everything else is just plain awful. It may look good in some of the screen shots, but keep in mind that those are taken in 1600x1200 resolution, the game looks much worse on a lower resolution. The blood looks fine while you're shooting someone, but as soon as it reaches a surface it resembles a poor paint job. Texture are sometimes missing, either that, or they're using a very low resolution sample on some of the trees and buildings in the game. The water looks surprisingly good though.
The sound effects are generic mostly, such as weapon noise and explosions sounds. As I said in the beginning, your mercenary has an imposing voice, very poorly chosen, and he receives orders from a female voice, also completely unimportant to the game. I couldn't help but feel like an ape receiving orders from a fox. I liked the Russian accent of the hooker (dressed in red, of course), but nothing else was notable. It's not surprising that the voices are ridiculous, considering that most of the time you only hear screaming and you only get to listen to someone talk to you when a cut scene takes place. Most cut scenes end up with you having to shoot the "boss" anyway, so you'll forget in three seconds what he was blabbering about.

Although it does not include all the patch notes, I thought I'd add this now so you get the general idea of what will change in the next major World of Warcraft Patch 2.4.0.

Welcome back, LEGION. Indeed, Joe Kucan is back, portraying the legendary self-proclaimed prophet Kane, through 20 years of Command and Conquer history: past, present and future. The 13 missions spread story explains what happened to the Brotherhood of Nod right after the Second Tiberium War, and fill the history gap left by the original Command and Conquer 3. And then of course some more, the action takes us a bit more into the future, showing just a sneak peak of the shape of things to come.

The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
