Zeno Clash - Game Review (PC)

Zeno Clash is a fighting game featuring some first person elements based on a modified version of Source engine. It is the creation of ACE Team, an independent company founded by three brothers (Andres Bordeu, Carlos Bordeu and Edmundo Bordeu), former known for their MOD games based on Doom 2 and Quake 3 engine sources. From the beginning the game was meant to be released only online, first on Steam and later on other digital distributors, at a reasonable price, similar to a normal MOD package. But despite these marketing solutions, Zeno Clash is still a full standalone product, an unconventional game that has brought a fresh breeze in a period when everything in the gaming industry seems to hover around financial solutions and not creativity.

If you are into fighting/action games set in a punk fantasy world, Zeno Clash is your choice. You will get plenty of fighting moments from the first person perspective (similar to Dark Messiah), some shooting sequences, but most important, you will get a world never seen before where order and evolution is not necessarily its main catalyst. You will play as Ghat, as he is regaining consciousness after an explosion. The training session takes place in the character's mind, conducted by a strange creature which seems to know the cause of the explosion.  This explosion was the result of a fight between Ghat and his hermaphrodite parent known as Father-Mother, who has turned on him with unknown reason. Yes, you heard me! Father-Mother is a hermaphrodite character, probably the only one in the gaming history. As weird and out of place it may look like, this character is just the first in a huge chain of unconventional creatures which inhabit the fictional world of Zenozoik.

Let's take for example the Corwid of the Free clan, some kind of a tribe which lives in wilderness, a clan with mindless members which suffer from different obsessions. Metamoq wants to help anybody despite the price he might pay for his actions, including losing his life. Helim wants to be invisible and therefore he removes every creature's eyes. Gabel eats other Corwids, and that's what he does all day. Ghat was also a member of the Corwid of the Free, but he left the tribe because he was overwhelmed by their craziness, caused by this total freedom, without any rules or moral limits. He still has a sense of admiration for his former brothers from the tribe, even when he begins to fight against them. But let's get back to the story.

Puzzle - May 15, 2009

You're starting to get sloppy again:
"how in this forgotten realm exists fire weapons" You might want to reconsider that. I noticed inversions are not your strong point.
"pistols made of fishes" It's "fish", it's not one fish, two fishes, fish has no plural, you learn that in the second grade.
"It is inappropriate to talk about a multiplayer component." This makes no sense. Instead of saying it does not have multiplayer, you say it is inappropriate to talk about it? What does that mean? What am I to understand from that sentence? You do know what inappropriate means, don't you?
"The soundtrack matches perfectly the overall atmosphere" Inversion, again.
"NPC's which are blocked in texture" You ate something, again.
Damn, just when I thought you were getting better...

Ok, I can't stop laughing now. I just finished downloading the game, as I'm sure you did as well, and I was looking for more info on it, since reviews seem to be scarce, and those that are, are poor. I noticed something very interesting while reading the Wikipedia entry for this game. I'm going to paste some fragments here, which I'm sure you'll find very familiar. Now remember, all of the below fragments are from wiki. Compare them to your article, if you will:

"Zeno Clash was a nominated finalist in the Independent Games Festival yearly competition, in the category of "Excellence in Visual Art"."
"like Dark Messiah meets Double Dragon"
"versus screens sliding in before combat is initiated"
"Ghat is one of Father-Mother's children, who has turned on him for unknown reasons."
"Ghat still harbours a sense of admiration for the single-mindedness of Corwids"

So about 1 page of your review is copied from Wiki and modified, if I'm not mistaken. Is it that hard to write 3 pages of your own? I wonder if I go back to some of your other reviews will I find similarities to Wiki entries? Some "Games Editor" you are.
Oh, you can delete this as much as you want, I've made copies now

Flaviu Volosciuc - May 18, 2009

Man, I'm glad you are back!
I'm sorry that I couldn't answer at the right time. (some of us still have a social life). But let's get back to the Wiki problem:

Wiki was the only source from which I found out that Zeno Clash was a finalist in the Independent Games Festival, so I thought it will be worth mentioning it, because the developers really deserve it. Similarities with dark Messiah and Double Dragon are obvious, and I'm not the only one to mention them. Versus screens are obvious again. How do you want me to name them? Last two fragments are facts from the story, so I don't see what's your problem.

Puzzle - May 18, 2009

I am happy to be back as well At least you haven't deleted my posts now.
My problem is that you copied from Wiki word-by-word. You didn't even rephrase them!
Oh, and about your social life, I'm happy you have one, but I posted these in the morning when I'm guessing you're at your job, and this is part of your job. If I'm wrong and this is not a full time job, just you guys writing reviews, then my mistake.
When you copy from anywhere, it is nice to put " " around it and mention where you got the information from. Since this in fact is not really your work, you should not be credited for it.
My 2 cents.

Flaviu Volosciuc - May 18, 2009

My review is far away from being a word-by-word copy from the Wiki article. Your opinion is too exaggerated and I have already explained every fragment that you had quoted from Wiki and why are any similarities with my article. This is my work and will be my work as long as my name is written there!

Mr Puzzle, am I now allowed to get back to work?

Puzzle - May 18, 2009

Wow, I'm sorry Mr Volosciuc, writing these 10 lines must have kept you very busy. I can see why it is so difficult to answer questions regarding your articles. I can also understand your "go-to-hell", "if-you-don't-like-it-don't-read-it" attitude. After all, you don't want visitors that actually read something, do you?
So, this is a full-time job it seems.
Oh, and don't worry. Just for fun I'm going to see some of your other articles and see what Wiki has to say about them. Have fun "working"!

Sins of a Solar Empire
The stellar "Sins of a Solar Empire" hits our PCs with a unique interesting new combination of game genres and a few cool ideas that should draw the attention of quite a few strategy fans. The newcomer Ironclad Games managed the impossible and created a competitive title indeed. But aside from all the prays and high marks this game received overall, its approach on RTS and the mix of elements it brings, one can find some things that will bother a few players and that will eventually influence the grades of this review. Ok, let's take it from the top.
Sherlock Holmes versus Arsene Lupin
Sherlock Holmes, the worlds` greatest detective, created by Arthur Conan Doyle is about to face his biggest challenge so far: Arsene Lupin, the worlds` greatest thief, created by Maurice Leblanc. Who is going to win this battle of wits? Who is going to be victorious, and, most importantly, who would you like to see as the winner?
Silent Hunter 4: Pacific U-Boat Missions
I thought a bit about how to start this. While saying that Silent Hunter IV is the best submarine simulator out there is true, it doesn't mean much, especially for new players. Saying it is one of the best simulator games out there is again accurate, but again, a bit of an understatement. Why? Well because... despite the high complexity and realism involved, Ubisoft Romania managed to develop a game that is appealing to the beginners as well, in a certain degree.
Sword of the New World: Granado Espada
Lineage II had it share of success. At the time the game was released, it was one of the most beautiful MMOG on the market. To take its place as the most beautiful MMOG, the Ragnarok Online (or RO) developers from imcGames created Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.
GC: Disciples 3: Renaissance
We were able to take part in 2 battles and what we saw pleased us. The transition to the 3D helped the game and gave it a better view on the battlefield. You can move the camera and this way you get a better look at the action. The units are amazing and their animations are clean and good looking. Same goes for spells and effects: you will love what you see.
Nitro Stunt Racing Stage 1
Last week I began to search some new independent games. Suddenly I stumbled upon this interesting racing game called Nitro Stunt Racing. The title sounds non-original but the content tends to be if not original, at least interesting.
GC: Aion Tower of Eternity
In a perfect world, everything is controlled by a balance between Chaos and Order. But what happens if things start to get messy and a great evil is about to unleash an epic conflict onto the universe? This is what NCsoft decided to unveil and also explain why Aion is a MMO bound to have success.
Race 07
So here I am back on the road with a BMW. This time in Race 07 demo. The only racing-simulation game that really impressed me at GC. But only with the help of the Steam client which probably will become the "god" of online distribution! Anyway a big minus for this decision of playing the game only through Steam.
