Let's talk about good ol' strategy games. Personally, I prefer Empire Earth, but recently I played Company of Heroes which I'm pretty good at.

This year there will be some pretty good strategy games. There will be a sequel to the CoH Sakura if you are interested. Named Opposing Fronts, it will arrive in Q3 2007.

Decent? Dude! what world do you live in? Starcraft is fun, alright, but let's not forget we are talking about "strategy" games and there's no room for comparison between the two games when it comes to that. There should be a clear mark between "real strategy" games or real life strategy simulators and "fun strategy" games.

Just Fun? In the last 9 years of Starcraft people were just having Fun? Especially the Korean dues that have Starcrat as "national sport". Dude, there's a huge difference between fun and playing in into the professional style with a well structured strategy.
PS: we should have this discussion after you kick some professional Starcraft a$$ ...

I must agree with Saltwater. It's been a long time since Starcraft was released and it's still played all over the world. And yes, in Korea it's a national sport and gamers are paid to play the game 8h a day. I must admit that I'm pretty good myself ;D :

I miss playing starcraft. Every week me and some mates would have a tournament.
I quite like dawn of war purely for the graphics, gameplay leaves a fair bit to be desired.

The fact that StarCraft has had such a tremendous success to the public is due to the fact that it's simple and easy to play by everyone. Real strategy games, like Empire Earth or Rise of Nations will never have such a success to the public as StarCraft because they involve much more skill, concentration and strategic thinking (which, of course is not available to the general public).
When you have to deal with dozens of different units (each being effective against another specific unit), different eras, and many other variables like owned territory, and different resource types, the game experience becomes much more intense, and it requires much more "processing power" from the player. You don't have to just build an army fast and then watch the fireworks as it destroys the slower-developing opponent. Real strategy games keep your mind busy as you have to constantly balance the amount of different resource types, plan the upgrades for your units, keep a tight budget for being able to advance to the next era, and when you eventually build an army, you have to carefully plan which type of units will be build and against which opponents. But just as in real life, were few people can understand art or a good book and most find more accessible a rock concert or a soap opera, few gamers can actually find a thrill in playing a complex strategy game and most prefer having fun playing a simple but exciting game with thousands of other players all eager to find an easy opponent.

Sakura, your post made make make a stand: ' thou triest strike down Starcraft players as if they heretics were to thy true belief'. Starcraft complies completely with the definition of strategy games you were so kind to bring to our attention. As well as art, gaming might be cathegorised by tunnel vision blaggards. One might say postmodernism in painting is nought but crap. May this be true. But it is also true that it's art. Your emotional reaction makes you seem shallow minded. And I believe your can do better than that. The fictional story behind Starcraft doesn't lower the mental resource level you need to put into this game.
Power Overwhelming!

Argument is the mother of all statements. Unfortunately for you, your reply lacks this essential feature. To remind you about our controversy, we were debating about weather we can compare the StarCraft-type of strategy games with the Empire Earth-type. In sustaining my belief I enumerated some of the differences between the two games that make Empire Earth much more complex and demanding also pointing the simple features which make StarCraft so easy to play by the masses, thus successful.
You, on the other hand, tried to make your point just by saying "it is.....because is it". The comparison you offered with the postmodernism in painting is not suitable here, because the criteria after which visual art is appreciated is much more subjective than in our debate, in which objective criteria can be defined.
Oh, and if you thought that me being shallow minded and having an emotional reaction is an argument, it's not. In fact, it's exactly the opposite: an error in argumentation a.k.a
fallacy

Well there are always alternatives. For example I really liked the whole Sam and Max episodes lately. Now I know it's not a strategy game, but it runs on almost any system and it's always entertaining and fun. You can find a full episode on our website plus several demos of other episodes... Just search for Sam and Max under the downloads section..

World in Conflict is pretty interesting. I tried it on a Gateway computer with a P4D 935, 1GB RAM and a built-in video card and with the details at low-medium it runs quite well. So I think the developers did quite a good job. And the rush you get when you play it over the Internet, oh man ...
