Family History

But who is Robert D. Anderson? He is a detective from New York with German roots. One day in 1940 he was called on a murder scene because of a letter which had its own name in it. It was a letter written by his grandfather, the old baron from Germany who was thought to be more of a demon. Robert sets himself on a plane and flies in Germany, a country already controlled by the Wehrmacht and SS troops to search clues of his dead grandfather.

As he arrives at the family castle he is taken as a prisoner and closed in a cellar. From here the journey begins. You play as Robert and try to discover the mistery the castle holds and what connection has to the German troops located here.

Some conclusions about the gameplay

The gameplay is just there to make you unlock the movies or the bonus materials. It is dull and lacks of dynamism. In a FPS manner you are lurking through a maze of dark corridors and offices. Sometimes you stumble on some soldiers or puzzles but you will get along quite quickly. At the beginning the enemy will create you some problems not because they have a high-end A.i., but because they are located in dark places. Dark places or dark spots which are more like pitch black. In general these are used to increase the feeling of fear that a gamer might have, but here there are used to decrease you area of view. Because the enemy has almost no dynamics and shoots you almost everytime from a fixed spot, they can shoot you also through walls or doors, so expect the unexpected.

The main problems will be caused by puzzles, which are resuming in general to open doors, finding the right keys, or finding the alternative route to get out from the level. But what can you expect from a game which was entirely created with the help of FPS Creator (a real-time fully 3-D editor) which uses no programming but custom scripts and hundreds of 3-D objects. You just need to drag-and-drop them into the editor and voila, you have a level. The editor is accessible for eveybody at a price of $49.99.

Some kind of a menu

This game has a different approach when it comes to the menu. As you click the executable of the game, a pseudo-menu appears in form of a book. Each page represents a chapter and every chapter is accessible from the beginning. But if you want to understand the story, you should play them in the correct order. After you decide which chapter to play, you enter in another menu where you have New Game, Load and Exit. So you push the New Game button and enter in the world of Chtulhu. But not after you have to wait from two to three minutes to load the game. The loading times are accompanied by a verbal introduction of the level. But these are too short to cover the whole loading period. At least the voice acting is ok, much better than what the other actors do in the movie scenes. Unfortunately every new loading of the level (and believe me you will die frequently) will bring the same story and the same long loading times over and over again.

Cinematic

The cinematic scenes are the reason why this game actually exists. There are performed by actors (probably fans) in German language which adds authenticity. But the performance is far from a real movie.

If you still want to see the cinematic but you are sick of the game, you can browse the folders of every chapter and run them from there original location with any video player that you have installed on your computer.

Conclusion

With all the respect for every fan-made products you cannot come up with such a mediocre product. The whole project whould have had much more success if they would have resumed to making a low budget movie. Definitely it would have been much more creepy than how the gameplay is.

Gameplay: 61

Hardly to talk something about the gameplay in this game. Is more like a pseudo-gameplay, a reason to uncover the story and to see the cinematics. Is like playing a Doom or Quake. But not so funny. You meet with two or three types of soldiers and a pair of monsters. Although you gather some weapons through each level, most of the time you will start the next chapter only with the pistol. The jump move is horrible and sometimes uncotrollable.

Graphics: 68

Repetitive and poor textures, very dark spots, too red fireplaces. From far distances the soldiers look like a pack of sprites. What can I say? Is like the first Wolfenstein!

Multiplayer: 64

Because of its mediocrity not many people will have the patience to try the multiplayer of the game which in may opinion runs much more smoothly than the singleplayer. You will have here the opportunity to test other guns that are not present in the singleplayer such as: the Thompson machine-gun, a pump-action gun, Dragunov sniper, AK-47, two futuristic rail-guns, etc. The HUD has the default design from the FPS Creator.

There are 4 maps each with its own goal. I wasn't able to test each goal of the maps because no one was online, so I believed the developers only from the text informations at the beginning of every map.

Sound: 72

It is hard to decide if this game has a good sound. In the gameplay the sound is horrible. Sometimes you can hear you steps even after you stop from moving. Everything about the sound goes like back in the nineties when the id Software games were ruling the gaming industry. Good voice acting in the game though.

Hardware: 63

At what graphics this game has the loading times should have been almost instant. But probably FPS Creator is not so good in displaying areas bigger than three or four rooms.
