So you are a "moving pile of cans" that has to rescue the ship and activate the cannon to destroy the mothership of the NOED's (a squadron of pirate robots). Not to feel yourself like in a Myst game, you are not alone. On the ship there is another robot that will help you with hints and sometimes he will create for you a bunch of gadgets. But as in every game that respects himself, the one that is available to help you, will not help you! Because his legs are cut!

So you must activate the cannon on your own. You think that this is so simple? Your wrong. The ship is a very complex system, so you need to activate a lot of devices in order to get to the cannon. There are six rooms each representing one device to activate which can represent the levels of the game. The good part is that you can start with any of these six rooms. Each room has three puzzles to solve located in three different locations. You will get access to them, one after another. This means you need to complete the first puzzle in order to get access to the next one. Only after you activate all the devices, the cannon will be ready to be fired. Everytime you complete one puzzle the game will autosave and you will get back to the main bay from where you can access again one of the six rooms.

The puzzles are resumed on interaction with the environment, the game taking full advantage of the Ageia PhysX engine. There are rooms where you need to load the cannon with bombs, another one where you need to activate the radar or to start the electrical system.

Level Bosses

In the third section of every room there will be a NOED to beat.

Like in every old school action game, these NOED's represent the level boss and in order to destroy them, you need to find a more inventive way to do it. Every NOED has a weak characteristic which can be used in your advantage. You will need again to use the environment to find the right solution to destroy the NOED. Though sometimes Blitz will be overwhelmed by the environment manipulation while trying to kill a NOED, and this means frustration. I admit that the developers did a good job in creating real physics, but sometimes Blitz is hard to handle while carrying huge objects while dodging laser beams. Some of the more narrow locations causes Blitz to hook up to walls or gates while carrying objects.

The high skilled Blitz

The rooms have different difficulty levels and although you can enter in almost any of them from the beginning, you won't have access to two of them until you get some kind of tractor beam. Blitz can carry objects with his hands, (even bigger than his own stature), paralyze and shoot the enemy, connect all kinds of objects with a tractor beam, climb on almost every surface with the tractor beam and suspend little objects. Beside these abilities, you can enforce your armor and increase your speed and jump height by buying upgrades. The upgrades and weapons can be bought from Karl (the other robot) using upgradium which can be found along your way.

Last impression

Although the game is a low budget one, it looks great because of the Unreal 3 engine. The surfaces seems to be detailed due to the procedural texture technology. Being in a spaceship and playing with robots it is obvious that the environmental design has not a great deal of variety. But because of the clever usage of different colored lighting effects and of authentic sci-fi look in every level the design of the game looks not boring.

The game is not very long, and because it's really funny, you will get the sensation of ending the game in a "blitz". If you like the game you can end it in five or six hours, depending on how much time you have lost defeating the NOED's. There is no multiplayer option, but Naked Sky is planning in the near future to add the multiplayer support. Taking in consideration also the price of this low budget game, the game is worth playing. I wish that the big developing studios will take in consideration that you don't need a lot of money to create a funny game with an pleasant graphic.

Gameplay: 82

Everybody can see that the amount of work was focused especially to recreate a real environment ruled by the laws physics. And Naked Sky succeeded in doing a good job. Some of the puzzles can be solved in more than one way and some of the secret regions in the game can be accessed only later after you buy some upgrades to Blitz. Unfortunately the playability is very low, because there is no multiplayer support and the secret regions are not a reason to start a new game.

Graphics: 78

Due to the Unreal 3 usage, the game looks great. The environmental design has a different sci-fi approach in every level and the lighting effects completes the high-tech atmosphere. Though being a funny game, Blitz seems to be inspired from Asimov writings and the NOED's from Sonic games (especially that nasty smile). On my configuration I had some problems in displaying some textures in the Distribution Plant level, though I had installed the latest drivers for my NVIDIA card. Let's don't forget the widescreen support inherited from the XBOX 360 version.

Multiplayer: N/A

Sound: 74

Nothing interesting in this field. The environmental sounds are correct implemented, and the background song (some kind of a Discovery Channel documentary song) makes its job, not being considered annoying.

Hardware: 80

Although it's using the Unreal 3 engine and the Ageia PhysX engine, the game runs smoothly also on midrange systems. Again this thing shows the good work done by a small developers team with a low budget. Well done!
