20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to Electronic Arts' "Spore" video game to create a CG animated feature.

Chris Wedge, who directed "Ice Age" and "Robots" for the studio, is attached to direct while writers Greg Erb and Jason Oremland are writing the screenplay.

Designed by Will Wright, "Spore" allows gamers to create creatures beginning from a cellular level and taking them through various stages of evolution all the way up to galactic colonization. The created beings then have the opportunity to interact with life created by other gamers.

EA and Fox's Blue Sky Studios are producing.

Wedge hasn't directed a movie since 2005's "Robots," which grossed $128.2 million. He's attached to direct "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," which is set up at Warner Bros.

Erb and Oremland were writers on the upcoming Disney animated feature "The Princess and the Frog."
