Since the game was released in 1997 on N64, it has been a while until Propaganda Games decided to take the project into their own hands and hopefully continue the series of the Dinosaur Hunter.
In this latest installment, Joseph Turok is part of Wiskey Company, a special ops elite troop, sent after Roland Kane, your former mentor. The action take place on this alien, shadowy planet, one big jungle filled with mean dinosaurs and Kane's troops at every step. The game uses the Unreal 3 Engine, a modified version to enhance the atmosphere and effects needed for the game.
You wield a knife, the almighty-all killing knife, the bow, pistols, shotguns, rifles, a flame-thrower and few others. You can choose to combine a pistol with a rifle or have two pistols at the same time, two rifles or two shotguns. You can choose the weaponry that fits you gaming style. You can also silent kill an enemy or you can storm the front, Rambo style (but probably you'll run out of ammunition before you kill half of them). That's why you need to play it smart. Because this is an open-ended combat you have the power to kill your enemy either in direct fight, going in stealth mode and knife them down or set roaming dinosaurs against opposing forces. Yes, the enemy of your enemy is your friend. Turok and his squad are equipped with flares that will attract dinosaurs where the flare was launched.
I noticed that when killing a dinosaur with the knife, a lot of blood is splashing on the ground, giving you a thrilling satisfaction. But when knifing a soldier, you don't see any sign of blood, just some sparks from the knife's contact with his armor.
You may find the A.I. of the beasts in the game to be very satisfying, as they flank you and your team-mate, giving you hard times when in fight with Kane's troops. Big dinosaurs will try to eat you, but pressing the Right Trigger fast will release Turok from the creature's jaws.
Besides the knife, the bow does his trick as you take out an enemy from distance without attracting too many suspicions. The scripted part is where you shoot an arrow and the target is too far away, then the target falls to the ground. From time to time you find dead bodies on the ground, where ammo for specific weapons is resupplied.
Propaganda Games promises a multiplayer loaded with action in the deep jungle, where up to 16 players will fight in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Team Dinosaur Hunting and some other secret modes available. I'm very enthusiastic about the upcoming of Turok, to find out what new features will the developers bring to the franchise and on what aspects they will remain true to the previous releases.
